With men's ice hockey set to become an official Big Ten sport with the 2013-14 academic year, the conference office announced today that the Big Ten Men's Ice Hockey Tournaments will be held at Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minn., in 2014 and 2016, and at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Mich., in 2015 and 2017.


Spartans Ready for NHL Postseason, World Championships

Five Spartans are readying for the National Hockey League Playoffs, which begin tonight. A total of 16 former MSU skaters played in the NHL this season. In addition to players, there are two coaches and a staff member on playoff-bound NHL teams as well. Of those not qualifying for the playoffs, two Spartans were among the first 17 rostered players announced today by USA Hockey.


Krug Grabs Three More Awards at Hockey Banquet

Torey ;Krug (Livonia, Mich.) took home three awards, and defensive partner Brock ;Shelgren (Chicago, Ill.) received two at the annual Spartan Hockey Banquet on Tuesday night at Eagle Eye Golf Club. Krug made history by taking home both the Outstanding Offensive Player and Dr. John Downs Outstanding Defensive Player Awards, in addition to team MVP honors; Shelgren was voted the team's Outstanding Senior, and also earned the Blue Line President's Award for the outstanding scholar-athlete in the senior class.

Krug Signs Professional Contract with Boston Bruins

Michigan State defenseman Torey ;Krug (Livonia, Mich.) announced on Sunday, (March 25) that he has signed a professional contract with the National Hockey League's defending Stanley Cup Champion Boston Bruins. Krug will forego his final season of collegiate eligibility. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

  • Michigan State is making its 27th NCAA Tournament appearance all-time, good for fourth among Division I institutions. MSU's all-time record in the NCAA Tournament is now 30-29-1.••
  • Michigan State is 10-8-4 against ranked teams this season, and 6-3-1 against teams ranked in the top five at the time of the game.••
  • The Spartans are 2-10-0 when trailing entering the third period, but MSU has outscored its opponents 35-31 in the third period this season.••
  • MSU has reached the NCAA Regional Final in each of its last three tournament appearances. MSU made Regional Final in 2006 and 2008, and won the National Championship in 2007.••
  • MSU played a team from the ECAC in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1989, when the Spartans fell to Harvard in the national semifinals. Harvard went on to win its only National Championship that season.••
  • The Spartans had an apparent goal waved off in the waning moments of the first period. The goal cage was deemed off its moorings before the puck went in.••
  • Union captain Nolan Julseth-White whiffed on a three-on-one shorthanded chance, and the Spartans scored on the power play seconds later in the waning moments of the second period; a 3-0 Union lead instead became a 2-1 Dutchmen advantage. Matt ;Berry had the Spartan tally, his 11th of the season.••
  • Former Spartan skater Rod Brind'Amour took in today's game. Brind'Amour spent one season at MSU (1988-89) before pursuing his professional career; in that season, Brind'Amour and the Spartans advanced to the NCAA semifinals.•


  • Spartans Fall, 3-1, to Union in NCAAs

    The Michigan State hockey season came to an end on Friday in Bridgeport, Conn., as the Spartans fell to No. 3 Union, 3-1. Freshman Matt ;Berry had the MSU tally in the second period, and sophomore Will ;Yanakeff made 29 saves.

But the Spartans, to the surprise of many in college hockey, made it into the 16-team field, and now they're ready to play on the stage they've been in pursuit of all season.
